Don't pay financial institutions for the privilege of holding your money. There are those that will pay interest (it's not much these days, but it sure beats any kind of fee) even on checking accounts. We haven't paid a financial institution a fee in over 15 years (credit unions are best for this).
Don't buy your checks, should you still write them, from a financial institution, they buy them from printers and then sell them to you at a profit. Just go straight to the printer, there are many online options.
We don't use many checks, but those we do use don't cost much to buy and don't cost anything for the credit union to process.

I would add: take stock of what you've got in your freezer and pantry. Make it a game -- how many meals can I make with supplies on hand? How many days can we go without buying any food (or just produce/milk)?
