I looked him up the other day when you first mentioned him and he was the first to come up. I am not able to put into words my feelings, so many people do it better than me.

DS does have a way with words, he is quite the introvert, even though he will not admit it and over the last three or so years has had to get a bit easier being what is considered an expert in his field. So many interviews, both radio and television during this time period. Usually all he asks is that he not look like a bumbling idiot.

Don’t you know that most on the forum, including Patty, are totally frustrated by U.S. gun laws and we vote in every election? Personally it feels like rubbing salt in the wound when you repeat again today your glowing rundown of Canada’s gun laws. You do fail to mention that assault weapons were not banned until 2020 after a Nova Scotia shooting rampage that killed 22. In a parliamentary system it is so much easier, in my opinion, to change the law quickly. President Biden would do the same if he could but that is not how our system works.
I apologize too if I sounded glib and condescending. I had written a long reply which somehow got deleted when I accidentally tapped on an ad. But the main gist was that I sincerely hope that the Bipartisan bills of Hr8 and Hr144 will get passed by the Senate. It’s my understanding that both bills were passed by Congress. I truly hope a few Republican Senators will cross the party line on this issue which will at least expand criminal reference checks before being able to purchase a firearm. It won’t be easy for this to pass with your Rogue Democratic Senator from Arizona. My remarks were not directed to anyone personally on the forum as I know how most of you are aligned. What is safe to say is that the far right and far left in both Canada and the U.S. are being enboldened by recent events. The right to bear arms bill was passed in the 1700’s. Perfectly reasonable at the time to prevent British milia men from occupying their property and before the development of police resources.

I wasn’t aware that Canada allowed the sale of automatic weapons until the Nova Scotia tragedy. There’s lunatics everywhere and many illegal hand guns in Canada too! The perpetrator of this tragedy was an ex military man so not sure if he took the weapon illegally. Sad too there were warning signs that were ignored.

And as Canadians we can’t forget about the recent occupation of Ottawa by our “ Freedom Convoy “ and the thousands of unmarked graves found on the grounds of former residential schools, mostly run by the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches. I will never view the Canadian flag, anthem and patriotic clothing in quite the same way. And I hate the word “ Frredom “ being shouted out in the Convoy manner.

Our city is dealing with a huge homeless situation as a result of drug and alcohol abuse. The reserves north of us are shunning their undesirables and they are heading here, straining our police and mental health resources. There are no easy solutions. As a working educator I tried to give these children some extra attention, encouragement and stability.

I tend to get passionate about politics. And I was galled as I am sure most of you were that the NRA convention proceeded in the state Texas, no less ! At least some entertainers and politicians abstained from attending at least in person.

Despite everything, the number of good people far outnumber the bad people and all we can do is never given up hope!

Actually firearms in Canada are either prohibited (cannot be bought or sold), restricted (legal under certain conditions) or non-restricted. Fully automatic weapons have been illegal since 1978. Legally a clip can only hold 10 rounds and there must be a certain amount of time between each shot.

While handguns are allowed (my nephew has a special license) the road to getting one is even harder to travel. Not only do you need a license to have one, you also need a special transport license as they can only be used at a gun range, or shown at a gun show.

The gunman who killed 22 people in Nova Scotia in April was armed with a “Colt Law Enforcement Carbine,” a Sturm Ruger Mini-14 and two handguns, which were all illegally obtained and in three cases smuggled into Canada from the U.S. These guns were already deemed illegal at the time they were used.

Friends and relatives in the RCMP, and regular police forces across Canada have told me that smuggling these types of weapons up from the US had increased greatly and the updating of what was considered illegal by the Prime Minister is really helping our Border Agents.

As I live 9 miles from the border I hear first hand about people trying to smuggle illegal weapons, so many are caught now. Then there are the poor people who don't understand our gun laws and are caught with illegal weapons.... Most times they are allowed to take the weapon back to the American side, but many times the weapon is confiscated.

As a "dualy" who has one foot in the USA and one foot in CANADA, i try to keep perspective that the USA **IS** very different when it comes to the Constitution and the 2nd Amendment and how the NRA and gun lobbyists have fetishized guns for their political purposes and have elevated that to the TOP concern for electing some of their representatives. That's a foundation of the USA. A lot of other countries, like UK and Australia where they have banned almost all guns, don't seem to understand that has what occurred, the misappropriation of the 2nd Amendment for political gain and, quite frankly, the money that comes from the NRA, gun manufacturers and gun lobbyists. The GOP has discovered their pot of gold and it always comes with a gun.

I see that the forum understands that our members are frustrated and support sane gun regulation. I think, after watching and reading so much since Buffalo, that the things that can be done at home by people at home who think the same are:

1. Increase the age of ability to buy any and all guns
2. Universal background checks. No buying without background checks at a garage sale, gun show or off of
Craig's list or whatever. Everyone should have a background check.
3. All gun owners should have to have a license to own a firearm and only qualify for it after extensive
training that has to be recertified every 10 years (I think that's a good number of years as weapons
can change as can ammunition during that time frame).
4. Increase "red flag" laws and WHO they apply too. So many of these shooters of these mass atrocities
have been angry white young men. Increasing the age of ability to purchase along with increased red flag
laws to apply to MORE people of questionable mental stability or emotional stability (the anger thing!).
5. Once on a red flag list you become no longer eligible to own a weapon of any kind. This "works" for
people who have done time and considered felons. They are no longer able to own guns. Those on
a red flag list should be forbidden to own guns for the rest of their lives too.

President Obama tried to do something about gun regulations. He had Mitch McConnell. President Biden has been trying to get something done about gun laws. He has Mitch McConnell. Every time I hear some IDIOT (usually a GQP) say, "Well why aren'y the Democrats doing anything? They have the Presidency, the House of Representatives and the Senate!" No. We don't. We have Kirsten Sinema, Joe Manchin and again, Mitch McConnell. Until those three people can see that life is worth more than their power and bank accounts and NRA money? I am as frustrated and angry as you.

Canada is not a perfect country but you are coreect on one thing for certain, if Joe Biden had the authority that a majority Parliament could give him? Gun regulation would have been done in Month one. Again, that's not how it works. All countries come to make comments on the USA and is mass shooting massacres that occur all too frequently but they haven't lived in or seen how guns have become a fetish with the GQP and the insurrectionists and those afraid of "being replaced." The USA has a very unique culture and it goes back to the Revolution and how the Constitution was written so that the USA would always remain free from England's grasp again. That's over 244 years of some kind of historical "paranoia" on guns and militias that have been swayed this past century by the NRA (founded in 1871) and the current gun lovers and those who fetishize guns. It's a terrible thing to have to see in our own country. BUT we continue to vote and have hope that this can be changed.

I continue to vote in USA elections so that I CAN make a difference and I know the USA gals on the forum feel the same.

MJ
Thanks MJ for expressing my thoughts in a much more diplomatic and eloquent way than I could.

Being an introvert myself, I can identify. Many of the people who know me will say "but you're not shy, why do you say you're an introvert?" Being an introvert doesn't mean you're shy. It means that interacting with people is mostly very tiring. An extrovert is energized with interactions, an introvert feels drained. Once I understood that, it explained why I was fine with giving a presentation in front of an audience, but was quickly looking for the exit at the cocktail party in the evening!

It's really impressing that your son is being recognized as an expert. In addition to interviews, he can leverage this expertise in situations which don't require a lot of personal interaction. Has he thought of writing a book? Or a column for a newspaper/magazine?
