Public transportation doesn't come cheap in NJ/NY. Bus transportation is not only expensive but difficult to use as in NJ you have to take a minimum of 2 buses to get anywhere you want to go and a round-trip could end up costing in time over 2 hours not including the time spent at the place you went to. I don't know anyone who would be happy sitting on a bus wearing a mask for over an hour each time or risking COVID.

She has nothing outside of housework in a 400 sq ft studio to keep her busy so she goes out for food, household supplies, cat food etc.2 or 3 times a week to get out of her apartment. She also has family and friends who shouldn't be the ones who always have to make the trip to see her. The doctors under her medical plan are at least 1/2 hour away which would end up being a $50+ round trip by taxi because the bus system wouldn't work to get her where she needed to be.

Also and more importantly a car means independence and self reliance. How can anyone deny that right to ANYONE especially when that person has already lost so much --- a husband, her home, all her furnishings etc, the ability to have her grandson over regularly. I wouldn't expect that or even THINK of asking that of any person regardless of who they as it would be a bit much don't you think unless that person could no longer safely get around by themself.
Logics, I so agree, especially the independence and self reliance part. I remember when I was without a car not being able to drive places for work and I was always nervous about getting sent someplace where a coworker wasn't also going - and tired of asking coworkers if I could ride with them - was kind of embarrassing.

Has anyone else noticed unusual cuts of meat showing up in the grocery store? The only thing marked down at our local store was a package of three thick little beef steaks, each a little smaller than my hand with the thumb folded in, marked as Denver Steaks.

I have never heard of such a cut of meat before. They were nicely marbled and the price was $5, so I bought the package. The internet gave differing opinions on how to cook a Denver Steak, but agreed it is a specialty cut one is unlikely to see outside a butcher shop.

We don't eat steak as steak at home because cuts of meat have to stretch a lot farther than that. I cut the steaks into hearty chunks and cooked the chunks in a skillet with a little oil, a diced onion, lots of little sliced sweet peppers, portobello mushrooms, some garlic, seasonings and black pepper.

In another skillet, I sautéed some rice and cooked it with some beef broth and a can of store brand Rotel tomatoes. Served the beef, peppers and onions over the rice, kind of like fajitas over rice. It was a huge hit and made a good bit of delicious leftovers.

The package of steaks was originally priced at $9.97. Now I am wondering if our little Food Lion received some markdowns from a much fancier FL store? It was the only package or I would gallop back and buy more.

I dunno. I do eat steak once in awhile as I am a full on carnivore. But I remember when flank steak was only good as a base for fajitas and flat iron was so wierd that many people would not touch it.

I could live without a car now if I had to, and will manage when Im eighty and the kids take the keys away, lol.

But I live in a community that has a bus to go to stores, and I am less than ten minutes from ost of my day to day things (church and crafting and the square where there are restaurants) so I could take an Uber. I also live where every store delivers.

But it would not be cheaper than owning a car with full insurance, even a paid off car.

I could live without a car.

My mom never drove and she always managed to get to where she was going.

Some older ladies I hang out with did say they would not feel independent if they did not have a car.

I have never had that feeling. I would just tell someone - hey - take me here or there.

But then maybe it was because of my "job" in the military - you know - ordering people around? Not in a bad way - . But just more used to saying and directing to what I need.

Now this might be a bad example - one time the guys came in and told me that my car had a flat. And I said - well - here are the keys - fix it - . We all got along and they all laughed about it. We are all still friends today on Facebook. Same guys that fixed my flat - lol.
