ICFrugal, our youngest rescue dog was spayed too early and has constant problems with her urinary tract because of it.. Our vet said a clue that spaying was done too early is that it also causes retained baby teeth, since the dog's body does not get the hormone surge to make baby parts become mature. She had to have her baby teeth removed.

That is the thinking behind letting Goldie have a first heat: so that the external genitalia develops properly.

Our older dogs were about five months old when they were spayed and do not have problems. The youngest dog is a mix of dachshund and spitz, and spitzes are slow to grow. She should have been at least 6 to 8 months before she was spayed, not three months.

So the trend has shifted from doing it possibly too early and what we would now think of as rather late.

Good info Mackie

If y'all can make sure she won't escape and get preggie, shouldn't be an issue to wait.

Or maybe just before? Now if they are in heat and you go to get them spayed, they will charge extra.

Hope it all works out.
