100 Frugal Tips

Post by Jackielou »

Starting this off on our new home. Lets see how well we can do.

1. Unwrap bar soap and allow to harden for a few days. The soap lasts so much longer this way.

2. Save your veggie scraps, roast bones, and poultry carcasses to make soup stock. Much better than the store bought.

3. Use a cotton ball moistened with some of your favorite cologne to scent a room rather than expensive air fresheners.

4. Use mateless pierced earrings as thumb tacks. You get to still enjoy them that way.

5. Instead of trying to get that sliver of soap to attach to a new bar, save them. When you have enough saved (use a sealable plastic bag) put the bag in a pan of warm water. Let melt and remove from water. You can let it cool in the bag, or pour into molds, this will give you a new bar of soap.

6. Instead of using expensive houseplant leaf cleaners, you can use a mild shampoo. Use just a few drops of shampoo in a pot of water, dunk in your cleaning cloth and wring out. Use this cloth to wipe down leaves.

7. The peeled shell from a hard-boiled egg is great for scrubbing the hard-water line off the inside of the pan the eggs were boiled in. (We have really hard water here, and boiling anything leaves a white mineral line on the inside of the pan.)

8. A paste of liquid soap and baking soda is great for scrubbing paint transfer off car bumpers. Rinse well after using.

9. Toothpaste (the paste kind, not the gel kind) is basically a rubbing compound and can renew scratched-up headlight covers. Road grit will turn the covers opaque after a few years, but toothpaste on a soft cloth and a lot of rubbing will make the covers shiny again.

10. The plastic mesh bags that fruit such as oranges and tangerines are packaged in make great dish scrubbers. Collect several, put them inside each other like a sleeve, roll into a doughnut shape and stitch together in the center with a little nylon thread.

11. Water used to boil eggs has some calcium in it. Use to water peppers or tomatoes to prevent blossom end rot. Egg shells can also be added to the planting hole or worked into the soil.

12. Make a calendar of free and cheap events (regular and one-time) so at a glance you can find something fun to do.

12. Volunteer with friends for a free outing that allows you to grow as a person, instead of just being entertained.

13. Used coffee grounds make a great scrub for hands, feet, knees and elbows.

14. Rubbing alcohol or vodka removes permanent marker from most items (doesn't work for wood or certain types of metal). This is excellent for thrift store items.

15. A solution of rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean microfiber upholstery.

16. Don't spend money on desk drawer organizers. The flat boxes that canned cat food is shipped in make terrific organizers.

17. Instead of spending money to re-decorate, shop at home first. Just moving around furniture, baskets, art and pictures can give a room a whole new look for no spending whatsoever. It's also a good time to thoroughly clean.

18. The colorful rubber key identifiers sold for pennies in hardware stores make excellent dog tag silencers if your dog has round tags. They fit around the edge of the tags and keep them from jingling.
