Add me to the list of those who would like a butler’s pantry. I have two sets of dishes plus the Johnson Brothers set that mom collected is still at her house. I have no space but want to keep it.

I have been thinking on this....
My ideal house would be all one floor, I am getting too old to climb stairs with laundry.
The house would have 2 full bathrooms (the one we are in now has only one), more to clean but definitely needed at times. I would need three bedrooms, a library/den room that could convert to a bedroom if needed, a special room for Hubby, kind of an upstairs mancave, and after cleaning (staightening) the sewing/craft room a fairly big room for my favorite past times.
A big pantry, with room for my freezers would be ideal. The washer and drier would be someplace in the hallway hidden behind bifold doors.
Hubby would need to have a place to do all his wine making and wood craft projects so a very large garage with heated workshop attached would be perfect.
Outside a covered patio area for our lounging pleasure in the summer, and an open area so we can continue to use our fire pit.
Room to have a vegetable garden and fruit trees would be nice as well.

This is a great post. Thanks. I learned a few things. I live in a small house. 1300 sq ft. It is not well designed in my opinion. Picking up on some of the things you all have said, I agree with a lot of them. Living in Florida, a big house means a big cost in a/c needs and that means about 8 months of the year of money flying out. Florida affords a lot more time for outdoor living or at least screened porch living. I can understand larger homes up north.
One thing I would insist on is the outlets up higher on the walls. So many homes that get flooded get water into the outlets and that makes for a potential fire. Floods are happening a lot everywhere and this would be an easy way to make homes more safe. I also would have the home one story because as we get older, which we all do, steps become barriers. Wider doorways to accommodate wheelchairs. I also would insist on a safe room. Tornados and hurricanes and destructive storms seem to be increasing and a safe place to hide in a weather emergency is important. Our utility room serves that for us. No windows, concrete block on 3 sides. I am not into a fancy kitchen since I don't cook much, but the recycled glass information was great to know.
The cabinet space is poorly designed in this house. A lot of wasted space. I am not sure how to fix it. However, I am staying here in this house and just retrofitting it as I can.

I would not call 1300 sq feet a small house. Here it would be about average. My house is only 1100 square feet and that includes the usable basement.Dgflorida wrote: ↑Mon Jan 21, 2019 8:48 am This is a great post. Thanks. I learned a few things.
